Butler Machinery Shootout Races

at Oahe Speedway

July 7 

Butler Machinery, of Pierre sponsored the Shootout races on Saturday.  In the Box Shootout, cars using electronic engine controls, national event contender, Doug Legner, Blackhawk SD, took the victory at the starting line when Dale Garber, in his potent, "Super Goob's Racing" '73 Dodge Challenger, left a little too early. Legner claimed his first Oahe Speedway victory of the sesaon by quicker reaction time over Pierre's Chad Uhrig oin the semifinal.  Garber advanced to the final on a red-lighting Bobi Legner. Bobi, and husband Doug field a pair of immaculately prepared Chevrolets and regularly compete on the National Hot Rod Association schedule around the country.

 

In the No Box Shootout, a class where electronic engine controls are not allowed, Pierre's own Thad Smith  was victorious over Rick Meier, Box Elder.  Meier drew the foul in the final by leaving the starting line .007 seconds too early.   Smith drove  through the quarter mile at 131.15 MPH with an elapsed time of 10.375 seconds.  Meier defeated Pierre resident Brandon Campbell, in their semifinal matchup.  Smith moved to the final by getting around Oahe Speedway 2006 Pro Champ, Ken Standiford, Midland..

 

In Trophy Shootout competition, Winner, SD's, Doug Percy, got the best of Steven Campbell, Pierre, by pulling a rapid .008 reaction time over Campbell.  In the double break out final, Percy ran closer to his dial in, securing his first win at Oahe Speedway in 2007.   Percy bested Marcia Graves, Pierre, in the semifinal,  and Campbell dispatched Alex Lindholm, Pierre,  in his semifinal pairing.    

 

Kimberlee Guether, Fort Pierre, came out on top of the Junior Dragster competition against  James Morris, the Speedway's 2006 Junior Dragster Champion.  Eight year-old Guether had a bye run in the semifinals and Ramona, SD racer, Haley Hopf, was defeated by Morris in their matchup.

 

Next races at Oahe Speedway will contested on July 21-22 with the Lynn's Dakotamart sponsored Shootout races on Saturday. In addition,  the third of a five race series, Dales A-1 Transmission Super Class,  will be run on Saturday.  Grant Pederson, Brookings leads the current point standings with Mitchell's Cary Shonley,  within striking distance. 

 

If you are looking for a family activity , then Oahe Speedway is the place to be!  The racing excitement covers all ages, including junior dragsters with drivers as young as eight years old.  Families are encouraged to drive the short distance to Oahe Speedway and watch the races together.  Oahe Speedway is located 14 miles north of Pierre on SD Hwy.1804.  Access to the pits is included with the general admission fee, where everyone has the opportunity to visit with the racers and see their cars up close.  Admission fees are $8 for adults, $5 for teens (13-17 years of age) and free to kids under the age of 12.
