Oahe Speedway receives Horizon
Award from Pierre Chamber

The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce presented their Horizon Award to Oahe Speedway at their Annual Celebration
on November 3. The Horizon Award recognizes an area
business each year that is committed to building the community and demonstrates entrepreneurial qualities.
Milton Morris, owner of Oahe Speedway, and Nancy Morris,
Track Operator, received the award from the Chamber
president at the dinner.

$1,000 win goes to Curt Humann

The 2005 Inaugural Season ended on Sunday with
Curt
Humann winning the
$1,000 payout in the Box / No Box Shootout. Racers
withstood the cool temps and gathered to celebrate the end
of an impressive first season at Oahe Speedway. Curt
Humann from Pierre won the shootout with a 9.151 on a 9.07
dial while Joel
Lensegrav from Rapid
City took the runner-up position with a 12.648 on a 12.55
dial. In the Trophy Shootout,
Richard Jordan
from Dickinson, North Dakota, took the bigger trophy over
out Josh
Eccelston from Rapid
City. Jordan ran a 9.234 on a 8.99 dial while
Eccelston ran a 14.408 on a 14.10 dial.

23. After four months of continuous
racing, the Inaugural Season comes to an end with a Box / No
Box Shootout and Trophy Shootout beginning at 10:00 am on

Street Trophy class Points Winner

Alex Lindholm appeared in the Capital Journal on Monday,
September 26, with a feature story on his first season drag
racing. Not only did Alex finish the 2005 season as
the winner in the Beck Motors Street Trophy class, he also
was the High School class runner-up at the Division 5 Summit
Racing Series ET Finals in Brainerd, Minnesota, on September
18.

Oahe Speedway to be Featured on
ESPN

The NHRA2Day show will be featuring Oahe Speedway in their
sportsman spotlight segment on November 13 at 10:30 am CST.
Coverage for this feature was filmed during the Wyoming
Ethanol National Open. The show will include footage
of the track and interviews with racers. The NHRA2Day
show is found on ESPN2.
Track ET and MPH Records set by
Minnesota Maniac

Rick Lawrence, also known as the Minnesota Maniac, resets
both ends of the track record during the National Open
weekend. In each of his four passes against the Samualson-Eliott Fiat, "Tricky Ricky" went progressively
quicker and faster. His final pass was the best with
an ET of 7.077 at 192.47 mph, while Steve "Opie" Eliott ran
the Fiat altered with an ET of 7.371 at 184.19 mph.
National Record in Super Stock Set
during Wyoming Ethanol National Open

Cool temps proved to be beneficial for racers wanting to set
new national records during the Wyoming Ethanol National
Open held at Oahe Speedway on September 24 and 25.
Ron Roddel set a new record in
Super Stock GT/MA with an ET of
10.79 at 123.46 mph. (at sea level). In addition to
Ron's record breaking run, four more racers in Stock and
Super Stock ran record times yet all of them refused the
records.
Gary Buer feeds Track Volunteers

After a full day of fun and work at the track,
Oahe Speedway volunteers were treated to a exceptionally seasoned pork
loin prepared by Gary Buer.
Thank you to Gary and his crew from the Madison - Lake
Preston area for their thoughtfulness and tasty cooking.
Oahe Speedway Team heads to Summit
Racing Series ET Finals

The first Oahe Speedway Team,
comprised of 26 racers, will represent Oahe Speedway at the
ET Finals in Brainerd on September 16-18, 2005. Racers
and supporters will arrive at Brainerd International Raceway
in time for time trials to begin on Friday, continue through
on Saturday, with eliminations rounds starting on Sunday at
9:00 am. The Oahe Speedway Team is made up of racers
from across South Dakota, including Pierre, Rapid City,
Huron, Brookings, Watertown, Aberdeen, Sioux Falls, and
other areas, as well as a few locations in North Dakota.
Results from the ET Finals will be posted as they are made
available.
NHRA Announces Altitude Correction
for Oahe Speedway

Oahe Speedway is now classified as an altitude corrected
facility according to the the NHRA. Conversion factors
will be derived from an elevation of 1700 feet. The

runner-ups of the Junior Dragster class are now being

More Than Just Announcing for Darin
Bergquist

The Oahe Speedway announcer,
Darin Bergquist, makes his
first pass at a drag strip on Sunday, August 14. The
offer was given to Darin by Gary
and Charlene Shepherd of Pierre using their 1981
Chevy Malibu. In between time trials and eliminations,
Darin took a break from announcing to make a single pass,
one that he won't forget. Let's just hope that Darin
doesn't get hooked on drag racing so that he will continue
to announce at Oahe Speedway.

Two sponsorship opportunities have been filled by supporting
businesses. The Gold
Star
Motel, which is located
in Rapid City, is on board to sponsor the trophies for both
the Pro and Sportsman classes.
Terry Henrikson, the owner of the Gold Star
Motel and a frequent racer in the Super Pro class, saw an
opportunity to market his business while supporting Oahe
Speedway. Dave
Osterkamp, who is also a
local racer, is sponsoring the awards for a perfect reaction time
through his new business,
Performance Auto
Style. Racers who
obtain a perfect reaction time during an elimination round
will receive a $50 gift certificate to Performance Auto
Style which is located in Pierre. Dave's store
specializes in car audio, auto detailing, vehicle graphics,
auto accessories, and performance parts. Show your
support for these sponsors, as they support Oahe Speedway.

and Tune on August 21 and canceled two Test and Tune

Oahe Speedway Thanks Petersen
Motors

A weekend of racing activities was made easier with the use
of a four-wheeler provided by Petersen Motors. On
Saturday and Sunday, Peterson
Motors donated a quad to the Oahe Speedway
officials at the starting line. The four-wheeler was
used to respond to oil-down incidents on the track.
Oahe Speedway appreciates the generosity showed of Petersen
Motors.

medical conditions by contributing their winnings to the

Donation Made to Make-A-Wish of
Central South Dakota

A weekend full of drag racing, poker run activities, and car
shows leads to a successful First Annual Draggin' with Hogs
and Rods. On Saturday, bikers gathered for a poker run
while street rod owners drove their hot rods to the drag
strip for a show-and-shine. Throughout the day, racers
competed in bracket racers at Oahe Speedway. The
highlight of the day came at 5:00pm when everyone gathered
to recognize kids from central South Dakota who have been
granted a wish from the Make-A-Wish foundation. A
portion of the admission fee taken in by Oahe Speedway was
contributed to Make-A-Wish.

donated the use of a new quad to Oahe Speedway for the
weekend. Racing activities ran smoothly with the
assistance of a four-wheeler which was used by the starting

Oahe Speedway Supports Make-A-Wish

Oahe Speedway is welcoming everyone to come out and
experience the areas newest attraction while supporting the
central South Dakota Make-A-Wish Foundation. Draggin'
with Hogs and Rods is a first annual event which includes a
poker run, street rod and motorcycle show, and parade of
vehicles at Oahe Speedway, while recognizing children who
have seen their wishes come true. Proceeds from this
event support future wishes for local children with life

Owner Makes Required Passes for
NHRA Licensing

Waiting two years to drive his dragster is nothing compared
to the five years of dedication that took to bring a drag
strip to central South Dakota. Yet, the two year wait
was all worth it after Milton Morris, the owner of Oahe
Speedway, made the required six passes for his NHRA
licensing on Saturday, July 9.
Volunteers Make It Happen!

Volunteers make is all possible at Oahe Speedway.
Without their dedication and hard work, this new drag strip would not be possible.
From the time the first load of dirt was hauled to the
operations of opening weekend, countless volunteers have
donated their time to make it all happen. Their
efforts will still be visible as we move into the season.
Volunteers will be involved in the operations of all race
day activities. They can be seen throughout the
facility wearing a blue shirt. Many thanks go to all of the
volunteers that worked diligently throughout the past months
and this past weekend to
build and operate a successful track. A special thanks to
Bob Thielen for the use of
his quads during opening weekend.

with car troubles in the staging lanes.
Oahe Speedway Opens!

Racers and spectators alike enjoyed a full weekend of racing
when Oahe Speedway opened their gates for the first time on
July 2. Racing continued throughout the holiday
weekend with the final round of eliminations ran on the
afternoon of Monday, July 4.

To commemorate the opening, a drawing was held among all
racers giving them an opportunity to make the official first
pass down the virgin track. Winners of the drawing
were Perry Ankrum and
Dennis Hirsch.

Oahe Speedway will officially open on July 2 with a Test and
Tune session and possible Gamblers Race. Races will be
conducted on Sunday and Monday, July 3 and 4. Click

Grand Opening Delayed One Week

Due to heavy rains received on Tuesday, June 21, Oahe
Speedway will not be able to open as planned.
Construction is still in progress on the track, yet it was
delayed all day yesterday because of a down pour that
dropped two inches of rain on the area. Crews are
working again laying asphalt on the strip and finishing
other projects. Races will be delayed one week and
will start on July 2.
Grand Opening of
Oahe Speedway is Fast Approaching

The Grand Opening of Oahe Speedway is set for June 25-26
with bracket races and a performance from the Mid-west Wild
Bunch. Gates will open on Saturday at 6:00am with time
trials beginning at 10:00am. The Wild Bunch will be racing
on both Saturday and Sunday. Work remains to be completed
at Oahe Speedway, but the local racers and volunteers are
working hard to get it all completed in time for the Grand
Opening on Saturday, June 25.

Here's another chance for racers to get their vehicle
inspected for the 2005 racing season. Racers will also have
an opportunity to register as an Oahe Speedway racer, which
earns them points in the Oahe Speedway point series. This
event will start at 9:00am and conclude at 4:00pm on
Saturday, June 4, and will be held at Beck Motor Company in
Pierre.

Oahe Speedway will conduct a tech inspection on Saturday,
April 30, starting at 9:00am. Racers will have the
opportunity to get their car inspected by a NHRA trained and
SFI certified technical inspectors prior to the start of the
season. Track memberships and NHRA memberships will be
available to purchase on site. Location and information
regarding track membership will be announced soon.
