Brianna M. Bogner

Monday December 31, 2007

Brianna Bogner, 8 year old granddaughter of Oahe Speedway's 2006 Street Trophy champion, Bert Bogner, passed away Christmas morning , 2007.  Brianna lost her battle with a very rare form of cancer which was diagnosed in late summer 2007.  Brianna visited Oahe Speedway during the 2007 season with Grandpa Bert and Grandmother Barb. 

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church(Fall River Falls and and Maverick Junction), January 4, 2008, at 10am.  The family requests no flowers.  In lieu of flowers,  donations in the memory of Brianna may be sent to Brent's Place at Brent Eley Center,  a half way home  for immune compromised bone-marrow transplant and cancer patients in Denver.  This center was invaluable in Brianna's care.  Please make checks payable to Joining Hands Campaign,  Brent's Place at Brent Eley Center, 1129 East 17th Ave, Denver CO, 80218

2008 rule changes have been announced for all participants competing in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Junior Drag Racing League program. All competitors are urged to review the changes as soon as possible.  Any questions should be referred to a member track or the Division 5 Technical Director's office.

Beck Motor Company returns as 2008 Street Trophy Class Sponsor.

The popular Beck Motor Company Street Trophy Class will be contested in a series of ten points races at Oahe Speedway in 2008.  Beck Motor Company of Pierre, has been in operation since 1969.  Ken Beck purchased the Pontiac, Chevrolet, and Cadillac dealership, later adding Oldsmobile, Mazda and Geo lines. Ken's sons, Trace and Steve, now manage the business and oversee nearly 45 dedicated sales and service personnel. The dealership has now grown to include a full service collision center, detailing shop and car wash.  Beck Motor Company has expanded sponsorship to include four additional non points races throughout the season.

Oahe Speedway is proud to announce the signing of Rocket Lube of Pierre, as the sponsor of the Motorcycle/Snowmobile Class for the 2008 season.

Rocket Lube, located at 319 South Fort Street, has been in operation in Pierre, since 1999.  Rocket Lube features a full line of Pennzoil products.  Amsoil, the official oil of Oahe Speedway, is offered for a wide variety of applications.Rob Moodie, owner of Rocket Lube of Pierre, is looking forward to the 2008 drag racing season.  Moodie and his employees are proud to be a part of the continued growth and expansion of National Hot Rod Association drag racing in the Upper Midwest.

SFI Tech Inspectors Seminar to be held  in Kansas City Jan 12, 2008

Bob Blackwell, Division 5 Tech Director, will be conducting SFI Tech Certification training on Saturday, January 12, 2007.  The training will be held at the Sheraton Kansas City Sports Complex, 9103 E. 39th Street, Kansas City, Missouri, 64133.  If anyone is interested in becoming certified, or recertified, as an Oahe Speedway  technical inspector, please contact Marlin Roseland, Oahe Speedway Director of Operations, at 605 223 9885. Reservations must be made no later than December 10, 2007.

Oahe Speedway Featured in National Dragster Member Track Profile

Oahe Speedway  is, once again,  featured in National Dragster, the official publication of the National Hot Rod Association.  In a full page spread, the speedway is highlighted with 5 photos and text detailing the facility.  This the second time in the past month that Oahe Speedway has been the subject in Member Track News.   The 3rd annual National Open was the topic of an article on Nov 9, 2007.

SD Hwy 1804 Project Complete

The final work on the project was completed yesterday.  All surface work on the project was finalized and only a small amount of seeding and grading was left as of late yesterday afternoon.  The addition of a turn lane at the pit entrance will allow for a much safer approach to the speedway.  The roadway was widened and resurfaced from the top of  Oahe Dam to beyond the speedway.  Two areas, "Redden's Corner" and the narrow bridge crossing at Spring Creek, were reworked and will provide a much safer route to the speedway. 

 

Trick or Treat at the Pierre Mall

Oahe Speedway participated in the annual Pierre Mall "Trick or Treat" fest

on Tuesday evening. The Mall celebration offers a safe and secure outing for the annual Halloween celebration.  Oahe Speedway Marketing Coordinator, Mike Schmidt, and Pierre snowmobile racer, Ed Pope,  passed out candy to the throng of assorted goblins and ghosts.  Schmidt and Pope got into the the spirit of the evening, decked out in
racing leathers and spooky helmets. 

Last Race of 2007 Season Canceled due to Weather

The last race of the 2007 season has been canceled due to the weather.  Races were held on Saturday, October 6, with no interference from the weather, other than cooler than normal temperatures and an increase of winds by the end of eliminations.  In the early hours of Sunday morning, the clouds dropped bucket loads of rain and saturated the gravel and grass areas in pits.  With temperatures expecting to remain in the 40's throughout the day, the last race race of the 2007 was canceled on Sunday morning.

"Eye on KeloLand" focuses in on Travis Falcon

After fighting Lukemia in his early teen years, Travis Falcon now fights to the finish line on a weekend basis at Oahe Speedway.  Travis joined the sport of drag racing this past year in a newly purchased '67 Chevette.  He now races almost every weekend and continues to impress everyone with his new found drag racing skills.  Local TV station, KeloLand, featured Travis in their "Eye on KeloLand" segment on September 25.  To view the article and watch the news clip, click here.

Ellingson's Featured in Jr. Dragster

September, 2007

Singing the National Anthem at the Oahe Speedway races has become a routine experience for sisters, Carly and Stevie Ellingson.  This experience grew into an opportunity to sing the National Anthem for the opening ceremonies of the O'Reilly Auto Parts Junior Drag Racing League Western Conference Finals at Bandimere Speedway.  To view the article as featured in the Jr. Dragster, click here.

"Team Oahe" Well Represented at the Lucas Oil Nationals in Brainerd

Oahe Speedway has attracted some top-notch race teams in its short history.  Many of the top regional teams that regularly compete at Oahe

will be in contention at Brainerd next weekend.   

 

Oahe Speedway "regulars" make up a large contingent of the Super Comp field at the upcoming  NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals at Brainerd, MN, August 9-12.  No less than twelve teams that have come through the back gate at Oahe Speedway will be competing for the Super Comp title next weekend

 at the NHRA national event.  Current Oahe Speedway Dales A-1 Transmission Super Class Series points leader Cary Shonley, Mitchell, and Grant Pederson, Aurora, holding second place, are entered.  Dustin and Darin Long, Mitchell; Steve Swenson, Valley Springs; Schaun Schnathorst, Huron; Tom Nygaard, Watertown; Roland Rang, Sioux Falls and Mark Potts, Gillette, WY have all entered the Dales A-1 Series this year at Oahe.  In addition, Dave Crawford, Council Bluffs, IA;  Jim Gottsch, Omaha, NB, and Tony Lemker, Lake Park IA, have raced at the Speedway over the past two years. 

 

The Super Gas contingent consists of Randy and Brian Nygaard, Watertown; Bobi and Doug Legner, Blackhawk; Bill Goldhammer, Mitchell; BJ Boles, Lake Park, IA; and Mike Belew, Sioux City, IA.   Boles and Belew,

have yet to run at Oahe in 2007, but have competed here in the past.

 

Super Stock entries include Ron Roddel, former GT/MA national record holder, Sioux Falls;  Bob Sherwood, Sioux Falls, and Marcus Allen,

Denver, CO.  Rodell set the national record in GT/MA during the S/SStk

Ellingson Family contributes to the Kaylee Greer Fund

After hearing of the injuries sustained by Kayle Greer while racing her junior dragster at Ohio Valley Dragstrip, the Ellingson family wanted to help.  So, they setup a lemonade stand at Oahe Speedway on July 8.  The Ellingson family raised raised over $800 for the Kaylee Greer Fund through their lemonade sales and contributions from racers.  To read the complete story, click here.

Magorien Family Assists in Watercraft Accident

Oahe Speedway competitors, Lyle and Shelby Magorien, assisted in the rescue of a stricken jet ski rider on Lewis and Clark Lake near Yankton last weekend.  Lyle is a frequent Pro Class competitor at Oahe Speedway, while his daughter, Shelby, is the 2006 BankWest Junior Dragster Class Runner-Up.  To read the complete story, visit the Capital Journal.

Racers and Fans Donate to Make-A-Wish

After a successful racing weekend and memorable Draggin with Hawgs and Rods event, several racers donated their winnings to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Dakota.  In addition, race fans attending the races contributed to this non-profit organization that grants wishes to children facing life-threatening medical conditions.  The 3rd Annual Draggin' with Hawgs and Rods fundraiser was held on June 9 with StreetMasters Car Club of Pierre providing rides in a parade fashion to Make-A-Wish kids and their families.  At the end of the weekend, over $1,800 was contributed to Make-A-Wish on behalf of Oahe Speedway and its racers and race fans.

 

Donations to Make-A-Wish were graciously received throughout the weekend from racers and race fans.  The following racers generously contributed their winnings to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Dakota:

Snap-on to Sponsor High School Class

A local representative of Snap-on has stepped up to sponsor the High School Class for the 2007 season.  Larry Davis, regional Snap-on distributor, is graciously giving a $50 gift certificate and a trophy to the winner of each High School Class race for the ten points races throughout the 2007 season.  The runner-up will receive a Snap-on t-shirt and a trophy.

M&T Fire and Safety Donates use of Tools for 2007 Season

Oahe Speedway is excited to announce the involvement of a new sponsor for the 2007 season.  M&T Fire and Safety, headquartered in Volga, South Dakota, is donating the use of extrication equipment to the track.  Roger Anderson, owner of M&T Fire and Safety, is eager to offer his assistance at the track through the use of their equipment.  Most of the fire and rescue staff at Oahe Speedway are familiar with Roger's products and services as he provides quality fire department equipment to many surrounding fire departments.  To learn more about M&T Fire and Safety, visit their website.

Improvements Planned for 2007

The Oahe Speedway facility will see several major improvements during the 2007 season.  Such improvements include the planting of 150 more trees, bathrooms and showers, shade covering over the bleachers on the spectator side, additional power hookups for annual site renters, improved surface grade in the pits, installation of an irrigation system for the trees, and more.  Improvements will be made throughout the summer with plans of completing some changes prior to the start of the season. 

Oahe Speedway switches to New Traction Compound

March 21, 2007

The start of the 2007 brings about many changes at Oahe Speedway.  Included in one of those changes is the use of a new traction compound.  After using a new product released by VP for the first two years, the track will get a new coat of traction compound from VHT.  Before the first race, work will be done to clean the track surface prior to coating it with VHT. 

TAS Performance and Amsoil Team-up to Sponsor the Sportsman Class

As in 2006, TAS Performance and Amsoil will be sponsoring the Sportsman Class at Oahe Speedway for 2007.  This class will run ten Sundays during the Coca-Cola / Budweiser Points Series.  Ryan Peterson, a partner in TAS Performance, is promoting the Amsoil products by giving a case of Amsoil oil to the runner-up in the Sportsman Class, in addition to a free entry voucher.  The winner will receive $150 and a trophy.

Oahe Speedway Representatives attend National Races in Phoenix

Several representatives from Oahe Speedway attended the Checker Schuck's Kragen National at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix on February 23-25.  Attending the races were track owner, Milton Morris, and two Tech Inspectors, Brad Lawrence and Dave Hausmann.  Brad and Dave had their names drawn at the end of the 2006 season as being chosen to attend a NHRA national race in 2007.  They were randomly chosen from the entire group of Oahe Speedway Tech Inspectors.  Milton Morris choose to reward two Tech Inspectors with a weekend at a national event as a way for Oahe Speedway to say "thank you" for the dedication and commitment that the Tech Inspectors have provided the track over the past two years.

Dale's A-1 Transmission to Sponsor the Super Class Series

February 19, 2007

A new series coming to Oahe Speedway this year which will combine the super classes running 8.90, 9.90, and 10.90 and Dale's A-1 Transmission is the official series sponsor.  This series will run five Saturdays throughout the 2007 season with a series champion crowned at the end of the year.  Over $11,500 will be paid out throughout the series with the winner of each race getting $1,200.  Dale's A-1 Transmission is owned and operated by Dale Long and his three sons Darren, Devon, and Dustin.  They offer certified transmission service and the latest technology, as well as transmission service on race cars, at their new store located in Mitchell.  The entire Long family has been involved in drag racing for many years.

 

 

The Mid-West Wild Bunch is Coming to Oahe Speedway

The date is set!  The Mid-West Wild Bunch will be making their first ever appearance at Oahe Speedway on June 9-10, 2007.  This two day performance will consist of several qualifying runs on Saturday with eliminations taking place on Sunday.  The Mid-West Wild Bunch is a group of racers formed with one desire... to go quicker and faster without the use of electronics, thus providing a much more enjoyable show.  A variety of cars make up the Mid-West Wild Bunch including rear-engine dragsters, front-engine nostalgia dragsters, funny cars, altered coupes, and roadsters, as well as the latest body door slammers and the famous muscle cars from the 60's and 70's.  The members come together from North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota, and Canada.  To visit the website of the Mid-West Wild Bunch, click here.

Riggs High School Racers receive Craftsman Toolbox from Sears

A season's worth of wins paid off for three Riggs High School racers who won themselves and their school a Craftsman toolbox from the authorized Sears retail dealer in Pierre.  Alex Lindholm, Carl Morris, and John Anderson represented Riggs High School in the Sears High School Class throughout the 2006 Oahe Speedway season and ended the season with the most points over two other local high schools.

Track Officials attend NHRA Division 5 Meetings and Banquet

Over the past weekend, several track officials attended the NHRA Division 5 track operator's meetings and awards ceremony.  In addition, several representatives received their Tech Inspector license from NHRA.  The track operator's meetings gave Oahe Speedway officials an opportunity to meet other track operators and learn about programs and events that were benefiting other tracks.
