Results Posted for Opening Weekend

Monday, April 21, 2008

Oahe Speedway's 2008 season has officially begun.  Test and tune sessions on Saturday allowed the racers to work out the bugs and shake off  the cobwebs.  Racers from SD, ND , MN , IA, WY and NB, braved the cool, windy conditions to challenge the well prepped track.  Sunday proved to be just as breezy, with the running of the first Shootout races of the year.

In the Box Shootout, Curt Humann, of Pierre, defeated 2007 Oahe Speedway Super Pro champ, Curt Hieb of Chamberlain.  Humann, with a better reaction time, was able to drive around Hieb for the first win of the season.  Jeff Friman,  of Pierre,  with a  top speed of 175.06 mph, and a reaction time of .002,  took the number 1 qualifying spot.

No Box Shootout winner, Thad Smith, of Pierre faced Roger Hanson,  of Pierre, in the final.  Hanson, leaving first on the slower dial in, could not hold off the hard charging Smith for the win.  Hanson, in his first outing in Sean Billet's former  "All Pucker'd Up" '81 Malibu, qualified fourth, while winner Smith qualified 5th.  Randy Hirsch, of Pierre, pulled off a near perfect .001 reaction time to take the number one qualifying spot.

Doug Percy, of Winner, took the first Trophy Shootout of the season.  Percy dueled with Alyssa Colson, of Blunt in the final.  Colson broke out at the finish line in an attempt to catch Percy.  Both Percy and Colson were the first to receive the new trophies  to be awarded by the speedway this season. Upon seeing the new trophy  design from racetroiphies.com on the speedway website, Percy told his family that he "really wanted  to win one."   Allen Pope, of Pierre, became the first racer to qualify for the motorraceimages.com Perfect Light award.  Pope qualified number one in the class with a perfect .000 reaction time.

The Jr Dragster Shootout saw Carly Ellingson, Rapid City , and James Morris, 2007 Oahe Speedway Jr Dragster class champion, run off in a heads up competition.  Both drivers, dialed in at 7.92, broke out at the finish line.  Ellingson broke out closer to her dial in to take the win.  Ellingson took both the top speed and quickest reaction time in qualifying.  The Bars Leaks sponsored driver lead the field with a .009 reaction time and top speed of 83.97 mph in the 1/8th mile competition

In the first Gambler's race of the season, Van Huse, of Onida, beat Mike Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND.  Huse, driving his unique Tuttle Mini Dragster, powered by a 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle engine, trailered Moldenhauer's '07 Denali in the final.

Gettysburg Mayor, Jack Axsom, Wins Oahe Speedway 2008 Mayors Challenge

Jun 16,2008

Jack Axsom (r), Gettysburg Mayor, accepts the winner's trophy form Oahe Speedway owner, Milton Morris.

(Still Shots Photography)

The Honorable Mayor of Gettysburg, Jack Axsom, took home the victory in the first ever, Oahe Speedway Mayors Challenge.  Axsom beat Dennis "Swede" Larson, Mayor of Blunt in the final.

The eight car field consisted of Axsom, Larson, Mayors Vicki Day of Highmore, Joe Woitte of Midland, Sam Tidball of Fort Pierre, Carl Brakke of Presho,  and Clyde Pfeifle of Timber Lake.  Scott Carbonneau of Pierre, stood in for Pierre Mayor , Dennis Eisnach.

Round one action saw Scott Carbonneau, driving a  Capital Motors 2008 Mustang defeat Vicki Day in her 2008 Ford Edge, sponsored by Pioneer Garage of Highmore.  Clyde Pfeifle, driving a retired, Ford Crown Victoria police cruiser, lights ablazing, got the best of Carl Brakke's Cadillac Eldorado convertible. Jack Axsom, driving Terry Axsom's 1990 Chevy 1500 pickup, defeated Joe Woitte, driving the family sponsored 1995 Ford Mustang.  The final paring of round one pitted low qualifier, Sam Tidball, driving his spouse's late model Cadillac against "Swede" Larson.  Larson, driving the Colson Farms '85 Monte Carlo, chased down Tidball for the win.

Larson and Brakke squared off in round two, with the Blunt mayor emerging victorious over the Presho leader.  Larson beat Brakke by .3524 seconds at the stripe.  Scott Carbonneau's excellent reaction time, .031 seconds, was for naught when he broke out against Axsom to finish out the second round.  Reaction time is defined at the time between the flash of the green light and the actual movement of the vehicle away from the starting line.  in addition, Carbonneau had estimated that he would cover the quarter mile in 14.60 seconds.  This number is known as his "dial-in", a number entered in the timing computer.    With a run of 14.409, the Pierre representative, was eliminated from competition.

The final pairing in the competition brought together Axsom and Larson, the battle of Gettysburg and Blunt, Hughes and Potter County, bragging rights on the line.   The final was over at the starting line when Larson had difficulties at the start.  Axsom drove his truck to the victory, covering the quarter mile in 16.592 seconds at 81.58 miles per hour.

All mayors were presented with specially designed trophies created by Dakota Classique Rock of Pierre.

Cowboy Country Stores/Runnings Farm & Fleet Shootout Races with

Dale's  A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series Race #2

June 23, 2008

Oahe Speedway's 2008 season continued over the past weekend with the running of the Cowboy Country Stores/Runnings Farm and Fleet Shootout races.

In the Box(Electronics)Shootout, Sean Billet, of Pierre, took on Rick Meier, of Box Elder.  Billet emerged victorious, in a come from behind run, to beat Meier to the stripe.  Billet utilized a quicker reaction time to chase down Meier, the number one qualifier.

No Box(No Electronics)class winner Carl Morris, of Pierre, beat Perry Ankrum, of Pierre, in the final.  Ankrum attempted to chase down Morris, to no avail, in the final.  Number one qualifier, Thad Smith, of Pierre, scored a perfect reaction time, to take the top spot in qualifying.  Smith fell victim to Morris in the semifinals.

Trophy Shootout came down to Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, and Alyssa Colson, of Blunt.  Winterberg took  the win, in his '79 Catalina. Colson, driving the Colson Farms, '69 Camaro, won her semifinal match over Jason Kotz, of Pierre.  Ed Pope, of Pierre, and Winterberg faced off in the remaining semifinal match.

Jonathon Huse, of Onida won the Junior Dragster Shootout, over James Morris, of Pierre.  Huse beat Noah Miller, of Fort Pierre, in their semifinal match, and  Morris used a quick .022 reaction time to dispatch Carly Ellingson, of Rapid City, in the balance of the semifinals.

The second, of five, Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series Races went to Doug Legner, of Black Hawk.  Legner, driving his immaculate Super Gas '92 Camaro, put  Tom Nygaard, of Watertown, on the trailer in the final. Legner, bested Randy Nygaard, Tom's father, in the semis.  Jeff Friman, of Pierre, fell to Tom Nygaard, in the other semifinal match up.

Monday, June 23, 2008

The annual Aerospace Components King of the Track competition took place this past weekend.  This prestigious race culminates in a run off between the class winners in Super Pro, Pro, Bike/Snowmobile, Sportsman, Street Trophy, and High School.  The ultimate winner receives a replica "Wally", a 1/3rd scale copy of the one awarded to National Hot Rod Association national event winners.  The trophy is modeled after the likeness of the late, Wally Parks, founder of the NHRA.

In Super Pro action, Terry Henrikson, of Rapid City, took his '07 Landshark rear engine dragster, to victory over Pierre's, Chad Uhrig.  Despite Uhrig's rapid .017 reaction time, Henrikson combined a closer to dial in run, with a  good reaction time to drive around Uhrig, at the finish line. Jeff Friman, of Pierre, fell to Henrikson, in the semis. Uhrig was unopposed in the remaining semi final match.  Number one qualifier, Terry Locke, Jamestown, ND, made his first appearance at Oahe Speedway for 2008.

Pro finals came down to Van Huse, of Onida, and Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain.  Huse, driving his unique '06 Tuttle Mini Dragster, powered by a Kawasaki engine, qualified in the middle of the 16 car field.  Huse saved his best reaction times, .006 and .008., in the final two rounds, to take the class.  Hieb brought his latest acquisition, a great looking '98 Trans Am convertible, to the speedway for the first time.  The car has a long and storied history in drag racing, having come out of the Emmons family stable.  The Texas based family has been a driving force in NHRA class  racing for years.  This particular car had already won a national event just prior to Hieb's purchase.  Huse pulled off  the aforementioned .008 reaction time to chase down Hieb, for the win, in the final.  In semifinal action, Van Huse beat his brother, Chris Huse, also of Onida,  to move on to the finals.  Tommy Dale Vines, Eagle Butte, pushed just a bit too hard, breaking out at the finish line, in his semi final run with Hieb.

Bike/Snowmobile finals brought together "Ninja" Charlie Snyder, of Belle Fourche, and Chris Boom, of Pierre.  Boom, on his '01 Arctic Cat ZR snowmobile, tossed away the win at the starting line, when he left a scant .020 seconds early.  Snyder would move on to the King of the Track runoff.  Semi final action saw three sleds and one motorcycle take the lights.  Boom faced off against Ed Pope, of Pierre, in their semi.  Boom had a better reaction time in the match, to take the win.  Snyder met up with Boom's teammate, Amanda Peck, of  Pierre. The lone bike rider, Snyder, on his '84 Kawasaki 1000,  took the win on Peck's breakout.

Occasional Sportsman competitor, Keith Stewart, of Reliance, made the trip to Oahe worthwhile.  Charlie Bennett, of Winner, made his first 2008 appearance a good one also.  The pair met in the final, with Stewart's '80 Firebird taking the Sportsman win.  Stewart singled in to the final and Bennett drove his '88 S-10 to victory over Paula Duncan in the other semi.  Duncan was the number one qualifier in the class.

Paula Duncan, Midland, fared better in the Street Trophy ranks, taking the class victory over Mike Haraldson, of Pierre.  Haraldsonparked his regular ride to run his great looking '64 Ford two door.Duncan took the  win at the starting line when Haraldson lit the red bulb.

Sully Buttes High School racer, Alyssa Colson beat up on both the boys and girls to take the win.  Colson defeated Carl Morris, of Pierre, in the final. In the semis, Colson met up with Gettysburg High School racer, Christine Nauman.  The battle between the two girls came down to a few feet in Colson's victory over Nauman.  Carl Morris, recent graduate of Pierre High School, defeated Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg High School, in the balance of the round.

Ashley Holm, half of the Twisted Sisters race team, met up with James Morris, of Pierre, in the Junior Dragster finals.  The red bulb lit for Morris in the final, awarding the win to Holm.  The youngest competitor in the class, Noah Miller, of Fort Pierre, had the best reaction time in eliminations with a great .019 in the first round.

The 2008 Aerospace Components King of the Track "Wally" went to the Pro representative, Van Huse, in the finals, when he was able to chase down

Sportsman champ, Keith Stewart.  Stewart moved on to the final when. Super Pro winner, Terry Henrikson, could not fire his car.  Huse singled in to the final.

Grossenburg Implement, Inc. Shootout Races at Oahe Speedway July 5, 2008

Wednesday, July 09, 2008

This past weekend saw the running of the Grossenburg Implement, Inc. Shootouts at Oahe Speedway.  The speedway welcomes the John Deere dealer to the growing list of weekend sponsors.

Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, brought his '85 Camaro to the line in the final, against Rapid City's Terry Henrikson.  Henrikson tried to chase down Hieb, and tried just a bit too hard, breaking out in the final.  Hieb, deadly on the starting line all day, ran right on his dial in to take the win.  Number one qualifier, Dale Garber, of Pierre, went out in the first round.  Garber wasted a great .009 reaction time, the best of eliminations,  when he broke out against Sean Billet, of Pierre, in the losing effort.

The No Box Shootout came down to Dave Gaudette, of Rapid City, and Perry Ankrum, of Pierre. In an all Chevy final, Gaudette chased down Ankrum for the win.   Gaudette's margin of victory. .007 seconds, calculates to approximately 13.5 inches at the finish line.  Number 1 qualifier, Ken Standiford, of Midland, did not make it out of second round competition.  Rich Ripley, Rush City, MN, lost to Gaudette in the first semifinal pairing, with Ankrum topping Darcy Madsen, of Rapid City, in the balance of the round.

Trophy Shootout winner, Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, bested a field of 21 other entrants on Saturday.  "Ninja" Charlie Snyder, Belle Fourche, lit the red bulb, in the finals against Winterberg, losing the match at the starting line.  Had the 3rd round gone differently for Winterberg's grandfather, Jim Jakeway, of Timber Lake,  the semi final would have been a family affair.

Jakeway lost to Ed Pope, of Pierre, in their match.  Pope, number one qualifier,  would foul away his chance against "Ninja" in the semi and Winterberg was unopposed in his semifinal run.

Junior Dragster Shootout action saw the debut of the second Geuther Family Racing team.  Jonathan Geuther, celebrating his 8th birthday, behind the wheel for the first time, lost in his first round of competition.  The Geuther family has experience winning, having fielded a strong running car for Jonathan' s sister, Kimberlee, for the past three years.  Kimberlee sat out the day, recovering from a swimming mishap earlier in the week.

Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg, used the weekend's racing to prepare for the upcoming Western Conference O'Reilly Auto Parts Junior Drag Racing

League Finals, in Denver, later this month.  Vetter won the finals against James Morris, of Pierre, when Morris broke out at the finish line.  Oahe Speedway will be represented by Vetter, Morris, and Carly Ellingson, of Rapid City, in the Western Conference race.

It's Already Midseason 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Race #5

July 6, 2008

Wednesday, July 09,2008

With the running of the 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series Race #5,

we have reached the halfway point, in the 10 race series.

Super Pro produced a first time winner when Cliff Jorgenson, of Pierre, topped Sean Billet, in the final.  Both drivers left the starting line on clean lights, with nearly matching reaction times.  Jorgenson was able to take advantage of a better total package, reaction time plus a closer to dial in run, to take the popular win.  Jorgenson is doing double duty this season, mentoring grandson, Noah Miller, in the BankWest Junior Dragster ranks.

Billet, of Pierre, currently tied with Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain,  for 4th place in the Super Pro standings, took out Dale Garber, of Pierre, in the semis.  Jorgenson eliminated Hieb, in the other semi final match up.

Number one qualifier and current points leader, Terry Henrikson, of Rapid City, was sidelined by Jorgenson, in  the quarterfinals.

Ken Standiford, of Midland, brought his newest creation back to the "Dam Fast Track' to take on the Pro field.  In an early season shakedown, Standiford's magenta colored, '66 Ranchero, suffered mechanical woes. With those problems behind him, Standiford took on Thad Smith, of Pierre, in the final.  Once again, nearly identical reaction times and close to dial in runs, made this a close one.  With a scant .0073 margin of victory, Standiford beat the hard charging Smith, by inches, at the finish line.  Standiford trailered Roger Hanson, of Pierre, in their semifinal tilt.  Smith met up with Dave Gaudette, of Rapid City, in the other semi, with Smith

taking the double break out win.  Tommy Dale Vines, number one qualifier, with a perfect reaction time in qualifying, drew the red bulb, in the second round, against Larry Iverson, of Pierre.  Current Pro points leader, Steve Boke, of Gettysburg, lost in the first round.

Rocket Lube Motorcycle/Snowmobile finals helped boost Laura Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, into second place, in the 2008 points standings.

Moldenhauer topped 2008 rookie contender, Amanda Peck, of Pierre, in the final.  In a match of sleds, in the semifinal, Peck's '01 Arctic Cat ZR took on the newer sled of Ed Pope, of Pierre,  on his '05 Arctic Cat ZR, with Peck emerging victorious.  Charles Snyder, overanxious at the starting line, fouled away his chance at the final, when he lit the red bulb against Moldenhauer, in the other semi final run.  Shawn England, of Pierre, points leader in the class, went out in the first round.

2007 Oahe Speedway Sportsman champ, Kyle Currier, of Onida, and Highmore's Dickson Bast, qualified number one, with identical .002 reaction times.   Both drivers would advance to the third round before being eliminated for the day.  Steve Ball, of Pierre, emerged from the 21 car field as the winner.  Ball, a first time winner, in 2008, took his '79 Malibu to victory over Jim Jakeway, of Timber Lake, in the final.  Ball broke out in the final, but it didn't matter, as Jakeway had fouled at the staring line.  The semis found Ball winning over Doug Percy, of Winner, in a battle of late '70's Malibu's and Jakeway beating Ann Hirsch, of Pierre.  Hirsch had to chase Jakeway to the finish line, breaking out in the effort.  Travis Falcon, of Pierre,

taken out by Jakeway, in the second round, is joined by Percy , at the top of the Sportsman standings.

Beck Motors Street Trophy finalists,  Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, and

Shawn England. of Pierre, squared off in their match, with Winterberg's '79 Catalina snaring the victory.  Bert Bogner, of Oral, joined the motorraceimages.com Perfect Light ranks, with a perfect light in the second round against Travis Olson, of Bath.  Bogner would go on to lose against finalist England,  in the semis.   Winterberg singled in to the finals.  2008 points leader, Mike Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, was eliminated by Winterberg, in the second round.

Snap On/McGaugh Trailer Sales High School saw Carl Morris, of Pierre, and Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg, face off in the final.  In a double break out

match, Morris broke out closest to his dial in, taking the win.  Boke eliminated Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, in their semifinal pairing and Morris used a great .001 reaction time to win over Roman Bast, of Highmore, in the remaining contest in that round.  Josh Anderson, of Pierre, passing on the weekend of racing, retains the lead in the 2008 series.  Boke solidified his second place standing in the points, with his runner up finish.

BankWest Junior Dragster finals paired James Morris, of Pierre, and Ashley Holm, of Pierre.  Morris was able to take the win when Holm broke out.  The number one qualifiers, Morris and Jonathon Huse, of Onida, with identical .002 qualifying reaction times, met in the semifinals.  Morris went .021 green to Huse's .025 red to win the round.  Holm singled in to the final.  Morris holds the points lead in the category, with Holm sitting in third place, just one spot ahead of sister, Stephanie Holm.

Dales A-1/Midwest Construction Super Class Series Race #3

This popular super series has returned to Oahe Speedway in 2008.  Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street classes will face off in the third of five series races throughout the 2008 season. Dales A-1 is joined by Midwest Construction as cosponsors of the series.

Doug Legner, of Black Hawk, currently sits atop the leader board.  Legner

ran to a runner up finish in the series opener, and backed that up with a win in round two, to take the series lead.  Kerry Willuweit, Estes Park, CO, passed on round two after taking the win in round 1. Despite missing the second race of the series, Willuweit still holds down second place in the series standings.  Tom Nygaard, of Watertown, runner up to Legner, in race two,  is third in the standings.  Chad Uhrig and Jeff Friman, both of Pierre, are tied for 4th place.  Dale Garber, of Pierre, and David Rae, of Gillette, WY, are tied to finish out the top 5.

Racing gets underway, Saturday, July

Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series at Oahe Speedway

Thursday, July 24, 2008

Doug Legner, of Black Hawk, retained his lead in the 2008 Dale's A-1/Midwest Super Series class, despite a semifinal loss to Jeff Friman, of Pierre, in Sunday's running of the third race of the series.  The Super Series combines NHRA classes, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street in competition, based on individual  class indexes.  All classes are qualified separately, with qualifying order determined by how far over or under the set index the racer runs. Legner qualified number one, in his '92 Super Gas Camaro, by running a best elapsed time of 10.027, on a 10.02 index.  David Rae, of Gillette, WY, was the best of the Super Street class, with a great 11.043 run on an 11.03 index.  Cary Shonley, 2007defending Super Series champ, place third on the qualifying sheet.  The Super Comp hot shoe, from Mitchell, laid down an impressive 9.055 run on the 9.01 Super Comp index. Unfortunately, for Shonley, he tossed the oil filter at the 1000' foot mark, and was out of competition following second round of qualifying.

First round got underway, with Friman, and Super Street contender, Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, at the line.  Hieb rolled a bit too far into the stage beams and was disqualified at the starting line. Friman drove on through the lights to lay down a 9.00 pass on  the 9.01 index, at 168.60 mph.  David Rae and Dale Garber, of Pierre, faced off in a heads up race in a Super Street battle.  Rae took the win, when Garber broke out at the finish line. Rick Meier, Box Elder, in his Super Street '84 Corvette,  won over Chad Uhrig, in his Super Comp dragster, in first round action.  Uhrig broke out by a mere .008 seconds in his attempt to chase down Meier. Bobi Legner, of Black Hawk, drew a competition bye, first round, due to Shonley's misfortune.  Doug Legner, by virtue of his number one qualifying spot, singled in to second round in the uneven field.

Second round paired Bobi Legner, and Meier, in a heads up Super Street

tilt.  Legner lit the red bulb at the starting line, advancing Meier to the semifinal round.  Friman dispatched low qualifier, Doug Legner, and David Rae drew the single to move on the semis.

In semifinal action, Meier singled in to the finals and Friman trailered Rae in the balance of the round.

The final race of the day brought together the best of Super Street and Super Comp.  Meier's '84 Corvette pulled to the line against Friman's '98 Mullis rear engine dragster.  Meier left first, on his 11.03 dial in, with Friman having to wait over 2 seconds at the start.  Friman left the line clean and chased Meier to the stripe to no avail. Meier took the win by a margin of victory of .0051 seconds, approximately 10.3 inches at the finish line.

The fourth round of the 2008 Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series will be run August 16, 2008 at Oahe Speedway, South Dakota's only NHRA sanctioned 1/4 mile drag strip.  Oahe Speedway  is located 14 miles north of Pierre, SD on SD Hwy 1804.

Oahe Speedway 2008 Budweiser/Coca-Cola Points Race #6 Sunday July 20, 2008

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

The sixth round of the 2008 Budweiser/Coca-Cola points series was run on this past Sunday.  The ten race series continues to produce some very tight racing in nearly all classes.

Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, moved back into contention for his second straight Super Pro title, when he defeated Dave Graves, of Pierre, in the final.  With both finalists coming from the bottom half of the qualifying ladder, they were able to sideline the heavy hitters early. Graves got around Joe Wolf, of Pierre in their semifinal race, and Hieb took out Gillette, WY's, David Rae, in a battle of Camaro's.  Number one qualifier, Bobi Legner, of Black Hawk, lost to number nine qualifier, Joe Wolf, in round one.  With Hieb's win, he has now secured second place in the 2008 Super Pro standings. Terry Henrikson, of Rapid City, sits one round win ahead of Hieb.

Larry Iversen, of Pierre, took the Pro class win, over  a red lighting, Curt England, of Pierre.  Iverson's '67 Chevelle ran consistently all day long, to take the win.  Coming off his No Box Shootout win, on Saturday, Iversen, doubled up for the weekend.  Number two qualifier, England, defeated Darcy Madsen, of Rapid City, in the semis.  Dar Hofer, of Onida, fell victim to Iversen in the other semifinal match.  John Scot DeMots, of Lebanon, in his front engine dragster,  qualified number one, one spot ahead of, brother-in-law, Curt England.  Steve Boke, current  Pro class points leader, was defeated in round one by Jason Ehlers, of Pierre. Iversen's win propelled him from a tie for eighth to second place in the season standings.

First time winner, Jason Kotz, of Pierre, rode his '01 Suzuki Katana to the top spot in the Rocket Lube Motorcycle/Snowmobile class, on Sunday.  Fellow Mad Dog Racing Team member, Ed Pope, of Pierre, could not catch the fleeting Kotz, in the final.  Both riders had great reaction times, with

Kotz putting together a better total package to take the win. With .002 seconds separating  the pair at the stripe, Pope's '05 Arctic Cat sled fell short by a matter of inches.  Arctic Cat snowmobile rider, Chris Boom , of Pierre, was atop the qualifying list for the day, and fell to Kotz in the first round, when both riders broke out in their match.  Current points leader, Shawn England, of Pierre, lost to Laura Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, in the first round.  By defeating England and advancing to the semi final round,

Moldenhauer, secured a tie for first with England,

Travis Falcon's third victory of the season solidified his top spot in the Amsoil Sportsman points. Falcon met newcomer, Jim Hoff, of Bismarck, ND, in the finals.  In the battle of the state capitals, South Dakota emerged as the victor.  Both drivers broke out in the final, with Falcon coming in closer to his dial in. Hoff took the semifinal win over Dickson Bast, of Highmore, with Falcon defeating Ron Neigel, of Pierre, in their semifinal match up. Falcon maintains a 500 point lead over Doug Percy, of Winner, in the points series.  Brad Ware, rookie contender, from Gettysburg, qualified number one and went all the way to the quarterfinals.  Ware's effort for the day places him third in  season points.

Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, took his second Beck Motor Company Street Trophy class win of the year.  The consistent performer defeated 2007 class champion, Brennan Gray, of Pierre, in the final.  Number one qualifier, Kerri Morris, of Pierre, lost to Winterberg in the semi's.  Duane Soper lit the red bulb in his semi match with Gray.  Current points leader, Mike Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, lost first round  to Ken Branine, of Harrold.  Gray and Winterberg sit deadlocked in the standings, in the number three slot.

Following an absence in round five, Josh Anderson, of Pierre, returned to defend his 2007 Snap On/McGaugh Trailer Repair High School title.  Anderson maintains a 400 point lead, with his win over Roman Bast, of Highmore.  Bast defeated number one qualifier, Sonnie Boke, of

Gettysburg in their semifinal tilt.  Anderson singled in to the final.  Boke sits in second place in the points series.

Lynn's Dakotamart Shootout Races Oahe Speedway July 19, 2008

Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Lynn's Dakotamart returned for the 2008 season, as the title sponsor for the Shootout Races, held this past weekend at Oahe Speedway.  Following another torrential downpour late Friday night, the racing action was just as eventful on Saturday afternoon.

Dale Garber, of Pierre, emerged as the Box Shootout winner, over Sean Billet of Pierre. Billet tossed away the win in the final when he left a bit too soon at the start.  Number one qualifier, Garber, took the win with a clean run.  Billet , unopposed in the semifinals, singled in to the final on a great 8.439 run. just .009 seconds off his 8.43 dial in.  Garber met number six qualifier, Joe Wolf, of Pierre, in their semi final pairing.

No Box Eliminator found Don O'Connor, of Fort Pierre, and Larry Iversen, of Pierre, squaring off.  With nearly identical dial ins, O'Connor left first, but was unable to hold off the hard charging Iversen, at the stripe. In the all GM semifinals, Iversen trailered Randy Hirsch, of Pierre. Despite a better reaction time, Hirsch broke out further under his dial in than Iversen.  Rapid City's Dave Gaudette, broke out in his semifinal match with O'Connor.  First time visitor to Oahe Speedway this year, Jim Hoff, of Bismarck, ND, found the track to his liking, qualifying number one.  Hoff met up with semifinalist Gaudette, in round one, with Gaudette using a near perfect, .002 reaction time, to end Hoff's day.

Ken Kimball, of Rapid City, denied Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, yet

another win.  Winterberg, who has been on a roll all season, was relegated  to the runner up spot.  Both drivers left on clean lights, with Winterberg having a better reaction time, but running further off his dial in.

Kimball singled through the semis and Kent Naumann, of Gettysburg, fell victim to Winterberg, in the balance of the round.  Curt England, of Pierre, qualified number one in the 20 car field.

One thing, for sure, one the Holm girls was going to win the Junior Dragster Shootout.  Sisters, Stephanie and Ashley Holm, qualified number one and two, respectively.  Both drivers marched through the field to meet in the final.  Stephanie used a better reaction time to dispatch her sister, when Ashley broke out in the final.  Proud parents and crew chiefs, Ladonna and Scott, stood by in victory circle,  while the girls received their trophies.

Mid Season Recap

The second half of the 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series takes off at Oahe Speedway, on Sunday, July 20.  The series first five races have produced some close racing with many new winners for 2008.

Super Pro leader, Terry Henrikson, of Rapid City,  holds a slim 103 point lead over Jeff Friman, of Pierre.  With little more than a round win between the two, this points race is as close as it can get.  Kerry Willuweit, of Estes Park , CO, still sits in third place, a position bolstered by a double points win in the combined points races two and three, on Memorial Day.

2007 Super Pro champ, Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, and Pierre's Sean Billet, are currently tied at fourth.  Doug Legner, Black Hawk, holds down fifth place.

With 27 contenders for the Pro class points championship, this class proves to be very competitive.  22 of the 27 entrants have competed in all five points races to date.  Steve Boke, of Gettysburg, leads the field, with "new" regular Oahe Speedway competitor, Stan "Butch" Monson, of Groton in second place.   Monson had run at Oahe in the past, but has committed to run the entire points series at the speedway this summer.  Once again, little more than a round win separates the top two contenders.  Randy Hirsch, of Pierre, took the fourth points series race win to propel him to third place.  Shannon Depoy, of Lantry, took runner up honors in the fourth race to settle in to fourth place in the points.  Thad Smith, of Pierre, and Dar Hofer, of Onida, sit tied, in fifth place.

Sean England, of Pierre, holds a slim lead over Laura Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, in  the Rocket Lube Motorcycle/Snowmobile points race. in third place,  Chris Boom, of Pierre, the speedway's 2007 champ, holds a three round lead over fellow sled driver, Ed Pope, of Pierre.  "Ninja" Charlie, of Belle Fourche,  trails the field, in fifth place.

Amsoil Sportsman leaders, Travis Falcon, of Pierre, and Douglas Percy, of Winner, sit tied in first place, through the fifth race of the season.  The pair hold a commanding lead over Chip Campbell, of Pierre.  Campbell took the win in the double points race on  Memorial Day.  Rookie Brad Ware, of Gettysburg, claims third place, with Brian Humann, of Aberdeen close behind, in fourth. Ann Hirsch, of Pierre, places her '66 Biscayne wagon, in the fifth spot.

Strong finishes in all five points series races have placed Mike Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, atop the Beck Motor Company Street Trophy standings.  Moldenhauer, running a potent 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8--yes, it does have a HEMI--has a win, one semifinal round, and two quarterfinal runs in the 2008 season, so far.  Alex Lindholm, of Pierre, sits one round win back of Moldenhauer.  2007 series champ Brennan Gray, of Pierre, and Shawn England, of Pierre are tied for third place.  Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, and Bert Bogner, of Oral, hold a tie for fourth.  Kerri Morris, despite missing race number five, remains in fifth place.

2007 Snap-on/McGaugh Trailer Repair High School champ, Josh Anderson, of Pierre, claims the top spot at mid season.  Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg, is having his best year, so far, pushing his '70 Silverado, to second place.  Second  year competitor, Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, claims a one point lead over fourth place, Carl Morris, of Pierre.  Roman Bast, of Highmore, rounds out the top five.

In, what could be, the fastest growing class at the speedway this year, the BankWest Junior Dragster series, 2007 champ, James Morris,of Pierre, leads the standings.  Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg, claims second spot.  "Twisted Sister's", Ashley Holm and Stephanie Holm, of Pierre, hold third and fourth place, respectively.  Carly Ellingson, of Rapid City, completes the top five in the category.

Racing gets underway Sunday at 9am, with eliminations starting at 1pm.

Oahe Speedway, South Dakota's only NHRA sanctioned 1/4 mile drag strip, is located 14 miles north of Pierre, SD, off SD Hwy 1804.

Oahe Speedway Signs JP Aerosports for August 9, 2008 Airshow

Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Oahe Speedway and JP Aerosports, inked a deal yesterday, to bring Jim Peitz and his Extra 300L, to the Speedway for a performance on Saturday, August 9.  In a rare local performance,  Peitz will perform his full aerobatic show during the 19th Annual Street Masters Dam Run Hot Rod Drags and Car Show.  Peitz, a native of Harrold, SD, learned how to pilot an airplane from his dad.  In a flying career, spanning 30 years, Pieitz sought new challenges 15 years ago.  As a self taught aerobatic pilot, Peitz began his new challenge by reading a book, purchasing a high-performance Christen Eagle biplane,  and taking to the skies over Central South Dakota.  Skill and hours of study and practice gave the pilot the desire to upgrade his aircraft.  In choosing the German built, Extra 300L, Peitz now had the ultimate "hot  rod" of the airways.  As one of only a handful of pilots currently flying the Extra 300L in airshows, Peitz  is recognized among his peers as one of the best.  He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of the International Council of Airshows.  For additional information regarding  JP Aerosports click here

Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series Race #8 Sunday, August 17, 2008

Tuesday, August 12, 2008

As the 2008 season heads to a conclusion, Budweiser/Coca Cola

Points Series Race #8 finds several classes hotly contested.

Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, leads Jeff Friman, of Pierre, in the Super Pro class, by just over  two round wins.  Hieb, defending Super Pro champ, sits just over three rounds ahead of 2006 champ, Terry Henrikson , of Rapid City.  Sean Billet, of Pierre, in his rookie year, in a rear engine Mullis Chassis dragster, sits in 4th place.  Kerry Willuweit, Estes Park, CO, still holds 5th place, despite only one appearance at the track this season.  Willuweit has expressed interest in returning to Oahe this weekend.

Pro class finds Stan "Butch" Monson, of Groton, with a  two round lead over Steve Boke, of Gettysburg.  Monson, a regular at Interstate Dragway, made the commitment early in the season to run for the championship at Oahe Speedway.  So far the plan has worked for Monson, and his quick '99 fastback Mustang.  Larry Iversen, of Pierre, proved that he was a contender in the past few weeks, jumping in to the third spot in the standings with a great run in points race number seven.  Randy Hirsch, of Pierre, and Dar Hofer, of Onida, round out the top five.

Defending champion, Chris Boom, of Pierre, leads the Motorcycle/Snowmobile standings through seven races.  Shawn England, a new "regular" at the speedway this summer,  holds down the number two spot.  England returned to Pierre this past year and is competing in

the Beck Motor Company Street Trophy class, as well.  Laura Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, is tied with England in second place.  2006 class champion, Charles "Ninja" Snyder, of Belle Fourche, is third in the points.  Ed Pope and Jason Kotz, both of Pierre, currently are fourth and fifth in the standings.

Amsoil Sportsman class is headed by Travis Falcon, of Pierre.  The "Flying Falcon" holds a commanding lead over second place, Doug Percy, of Winner.  Rookie contender, Brad Ware, of Gettysburg, sits one round behind Percy, in third place. Chip Campbell, of Pierre, driving a new car for the 2008 season,  places in fourth, through seven series races.  Brian Humann, of Aberdeen, is two rounds behind  Campbell, in fifth place.  Humann is surrounded by Campbell's, with Chip's son, Steven, only two points behind, in sixth place.

Mike Moldenhuaer, of Jud, ND, and Alex Lindholm, of Pierre, are tied for first place in the Beck Motor Company Street Trophy class.  2007 champ, Brennan Gray, of Pierre, and Ron Winterberg of Timber Lake, as well as Bert Bogner, of Oral, are knotted up, in second place.  Third place contender, Shawn England, leads fourth place, Kerri Morris, by just over two rounds.  Randy Magilke, of Pierre,  based on his runner up finish in race seven, holds fifth place.

Josh Anderson, of Pierre, still leads the Snap On/McGaugh Trailer Repair

standings, despite missing several mid season races.  Anderson, benefiting from a double points victory on Memorial Day, leads Carl Morris, of Pierre,  by just over two rounds going in to this weekend.  Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, maintains a one point lead over Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg, in third and fourth place respectively.  Roman Bast, of Highmore, places in the fifth slot.

BankWest Junior Dragster standings finds a familiar face a the top.  Defending champion, James Morris, of Pierre, leads Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg, in second place.  Ashley Holm, of Pierre, is one round behind Vetter, in third place.  Stephanie Holm, of Pierre, and Carly Ellingson, of Rapid City, are tied in 4th place.  Onida's Jonathon Huse holds down fifth place.

Round eight of the 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series will get underway this weekend at Oahe Speedway.  Dakota Mill and Grain, Inc will sponsor the shootout races on Saturday, August 16.  In addition, round four  of the Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series will be run on Saturday.  Sunday's action will include the eighth of ten Budweiser/ Coca Cola points races.  Racing begins at 1pm on Saturday, with qualifying and eliminations starting at 5pm.  Sunday action starts at 9am with qualifying, and eliminations at 1pm.

Pioneer Garage, Inc. National Dragster Challenge &Coca Cola Bankwest Junior Dragster Points Race #6 at Oahe Speedway Saturday, August 2, 2008

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Pioneer Garage, Inc. of Pierre and Highmore, and Hand County Implement of Miller, sponsored the recently completed National Dragster Challenger at Oahe Speedway. In addition, points race number six of the 2008 Coca Cola BankWest Junior Dragster series was contested.

Super Pro eliminations paired Joe Wolf and John Hines, both of Pierre, in the finals.  Wolf put together a .032 package to defeat Hines, for the "Wally".  Class champions in all categories were awarded an official National Hot Rod Association "Wally" trophy.  The trophies, modeled after the likeness of the late, Wally Parks, founder of the NHRA, are a treasured award.  Wolf now has two in his trophy case.  Dale Garber, of Pierre, and Jeff Friman, of Pierre, fell in the semis. Wolf went pole to pole to pole, qualifying number one in the 16 car field.

Dave Gaudette, Rapid City, picked up his first "Wally", defeating Tommy Dale Vines, of Eagle Butte, in the Pro finals.  Gaudette's hard launching '69 Chevelle, got the best of Ken Standiford, of Midland in the semifinals.  Current Budweiser/Coca Cola points leader, Stan "Butch" Monson, of Groton, was trailered, by Vines, in the other semi final match.  Larry Iversen, of Pierre, low qualifier, lost in the first round.

Laura Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, won her first "Wally" over fellow North Dakotan, Roger Schlecht, in the Motorcycle/Snowmobile finals. Schlecht, of Bismarck, broke out against Moldenhauer in the final.  Amanda Peck, of Pierre, riding a 2001 Arctic Cat ZR, was unable to hold off Moldenhauer's '08 Hyabusa, in the semis.  Schlecht, a first time visitor to Oahe Speedway, singled in to the final.

Current Budweiser/Coca Cola Amsoil Sportsman points leader,Travis Falcon, of Pierre, was victorious over Ann Hirsch, of Pierre in the finals.  Hirsch left first, on the slower dial in, but Falcon was a bit quicker on the tree, catching Hirsh in the lights.   Falcon, on a hot streak most of the 2008 season, added his first "Wally" to his growing trophy collection.   Falcon singled in to the finals in the uneven field, and Hirsch emerged over Alyssa Colson, of Blunt, when Colson lit the red  bulb in the balance of the semis. Falcon was the number one qualifier.

Kerri Morris, of Pierre, in the Beck Motor Company Street Trophy class, saved her best reaction of the day, a great .004, for the finals against Bert Bogner, of Oral.  Morris denied a second "Wally' to the "Sneaky Snake".  Bogner was the 2007 Street Trophy winner in the National Dragster Challenge.  Morris bested Paula Duncan, of Midland, in their semifinal tilt.  Randy Magilke, of Pierre, had one of his best days at the speedway until he left too soon against Bogner in the remaining semifinal contest.

Shelby Magorien, of Pierre, entering her first Snap On/ McGaugh Trailer Repair High School contest of the year, defeated Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, for the title. In a double breakout final. Magorien's Mustang was closer to dial in than Ehler's Camaro.   Ehlers topped Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg, in the semis and number one qualifier, Alyssa Colson fell off the pace against Magorien in their semifinal pairing.

Josh Meuhler, of Bismarck, returned to Oahe Speedway, for a second visit in 2008.  Paired with James Morris, of Pierre, Meuhler emerged the winner with a quicker reaction time.  Morris, current points leader in the Coca Cola BankWest Junior Dragster series, was able to maintain the comfortable lead in the points race, despite the final round loss.  Morris got around Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg in the semis, and Meuhler dispatched Carly Ellingson, of Rapid City, to advance to the final.  Stephanie Holm, of Pierre, number one qualifier came up short against Muehler in the first round.

Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Race #7

Sunday, August 3, 2008

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Round seven of the 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series is in the books.  Many of the points battles are too close to call at this point in the season.

Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, and Jeff Friman, of Pierre, met in the Super Pro finals, with Hieb emerging as the winner.  Hieb, utilizing a great .039 light, was able to hold off Friman's hard charge, to take the win.  Hieb marched through the field on great reaction times all day.  Friman got around Pat Murphy, of Pierre, in the semis, with Hieb defeating Bobi Legner, of Black Hawk, in the balance of the round. Murphy was the number one qualifier in the 16 car field. Curt Humann, of Pierre, pulled off an .015 package in round one.

Stan "Butch" Monson, of Groton, chased down Jason Ehlers, of Pierre, in the Pro final.  Once again, reaction time was a factor in the victory, with Monson and his '69 Mustang pulling an .026 at the staring line.  Ehlers was unable to hold off Monson at the stripe.  Steve Boke, number two in the 2008 Pro points series, fell to Monson in the semis.  Ehlers singled in to the finals in the uneven field, based on his reaction time in round three. With the win, Monson takes over the season points lead.  Fred Waxler, of Pierre, became the newest motorraceimages.com Perfect Light award winner, with his .000 reaction time in qualifying.  Waxler met up with Monson, in round one, and was eliminated by the eventual winner.

Number one and  two qualifiers, Chris Boom, of Pierre, and Charles Snyder, of Belle Fourche tangled in the Rocket Lube Motorcycle/Snowmobile finals.  Boom took the final, when

Snyder got to the finish line a little too soon.  Snyder broke out by  .02 seconds to give Boom the win.  Saturday's Trophy Shootout runner-up, Roger Schelcht, of Bismarck, ND, ended his second day of competition at Oahe Speedway, with semi final loss to Boom. Snyder singled in  to the finals.

A 23 car Amsoil Sportsman field came down to rookie Brad Ware, of Gettysburg, and Dan Adams, of Pierre, squaring off for the win. Adams, driving his '61 Studebaker, was unable  to catch Ware.  Adams, in his best showing of the year, qualified number two in the 23 car field.  Ware trailered number one qualifier, Derek Gray, of Pierre, in the quarter finals.

Beck Motor Street Trophy found Randy Magilke, of Pierre, and Bert Bogner, of Oral, meeting for bragging rights in the finals.  In a double break out final, Bogner, forced  the issue, in chasing Magilke to the finish line.  Bogner's break out was closer to his dial, taking  the win. Magilke, number one qualifier, singled in to the finals, with Bogner defeating Ken Branine, of Harrold, in the other semi final match.

Once again, the top two qualifiers met in the finals of the Snap On/McGaugh Trailer Repair High School Finals.  On a very competitive day of racing, Carl Morris, of Pierre, took the win over Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre.  Ehlers won his semifinal match over Alyssa Colson, of Blunt.  Number one qualifier, Morris, singled to the finals.

BankWest Junior Dragster finals paired James Morris, of Pierre, and Jonathon Huse, of Onida.  Morris used a great reaction time, to catch, the first leaving, Huse.  Ashley Holm, number one qualifier, was eliminated by Morris in the semis.  Huse singled in to the finals. Cody Ryckman, of Fort Pierre, won her first round of eliminations, on her first day of competition in a junior dragster.

Rookie Jonathan Geuther, of Fort Pierre, won the Junior Gambler's race, defeating Carly Ellingson, of Rapid City, in the final.

Paul Berger, of Pierre, took  the cash in the Gambler's race.  In another rookie match up, Berger met up with Jeri Ann Vines, of Eagle Butte.  In the double break out final, Berger finished closer to his dial in, to take the win.

Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Race #7 Sunday, August 3, 2008

Thursday, August 7, 2008

Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Race #8 Oahe Speedway August 17, 2008

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

As the 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series heads toward a Labor Day Weekend finale, only the Coca Cola BankWest Junior Dragster series appears to be a lock.   Despite a semi final loss to Jonathon Huse, of Onida, James Morris, of Pierre,  has secured a third championship, with two series races left on the schedule.  Stephanie Holm, of Pierre, singled in to the finals.  Huse and Holm met in the finals, with Holm, emerging the victor.  Number one qualifier, Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg, lost to Morris, in round one.

Snap On/ McGaugh Trailer Repair High School finals found Carl Morris, of Pierre and Alyssa Colson, of Blunt, take the lights.  Morris, based on a quicker reaction time, took the win.  Morris took the semifinal round win over a red lighting Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg.  The number two qualifier, Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, fell to Colson, in the other semifinal match.  Boke, was number one qualifier.

Beck Motor Company Street Trophy winner Brennan Gray, of Pierre, defeated, multi event winner, Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake , in the final.

Gray singled in to the final, with Winterberg defeating 2006 Street Trophy champ, Bert Bogner, of Oral, in their semifinal match.  Gray leads the charge to repeat his 2007 championship, by a round win over Winterberg.

Bogner sidelined number one qualifier, Kerri Morris, in round two.

Paula Duncan, of Midland, snagged her first  Amsoil Sportsman trophy of the 2008 season, defeating Steve Zebroski, of Pierre, in the final.  Duncan, driving her '96 Cougar, utilized a better reaction time to trailer Zebroski, in Van Huse's '06 Tuttle Mini-Dragster.  Travis Falcon, of Pierre, lost to Duncan, in the semi's, breaking out by .044 seconds.  Zebroski singled in to the finals, in the uneven field.  Number one qualifier, Brian Humann, of Aberdeen, fell to Duncan in the first round.

Rocket Lube Motorcycle/Snowmobile finals matched up Chris Boom, of Pierre, and Shawn England, of Pierre.  Boom, number six qualifier, riding his '01 Arctic Cat ZR, used a better reaction time to get around number one qualifier England. Jason Kotz, of Pierre, lost to Boom, in the semis, with England singling in to the finals.

Ken Standiford, Saturday's No Box Shootout winner, doubled up, winning the Pro class on Sunday.  In a meeting of late '60's blue ovals,  Stan "Butch" Monson, driving his '69 Mustang, was unable to catch Standiford's '66 Ranchero, in the finals. In a single run, Monson only took the starting beams, and backed out, in the semis, due to  driveline issues.  Standiford ran only .002 over his dial in to cover Jason Ehlers, of Pierre in their semi final tilt.  In, yet another, number one qualifier round one loss, Roger Hanson, of Pierre, tossed away his win via the red bulb, against winner Standiford.

Super Pro's Jeff Friman, of Pierre, handed Randy Nygaard, of Watertown his second runner up finish of the weekend.  Nygaard was runner up in the Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series race on Saturday.  Nygaard pulled a slower light and was further off his dial in to hand the victory to Friman.  Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, fell to Friman in the semis, with Nygaard, singling in to the final.  John Hines, of Pierre, and Tom Nygaard, of Watertown , attained perfect lights in qualifying.  Hines was credited with the number one spot on the ladder, being the first to strike.  The ranking was to no avail, as Hines would suffer mechanical difficulty in the staging lanes.  Hines was forced to withdraw from competition at that point.  Curt Hieb grabbed a perfect light in round two against Kerry Willuweit, of Estes Park, CO.

Racing resumes on August 30, 31 and September 1, at the "Dam Fast Track", South Dakota's only  National Hot Rod Association sanctioned 1/4 Mile Dragstrip.  Oahe Speedway is located 14 miles north of Pierre, SD, off SD Hwy 1804.

Dakota Mill & Grain, Inc. Shootout Races Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction  Super Series Race #4 Oahe Speedway August 16, 2008

 Monday, August 18, 2008

Saturday's racing action, sponsored by Dakota Mill & Grain, Inc., offered great competition in all classes.

Richard Pyle, Chadron, NE, returned to the speedway for the first time since Memorial Day.  Pyle made the long tow worthwhile, when he defeated another long hauler, David Rae, of Gillette, WY, in the Box Shootout final.  Pyle took the win light when Rae broke out at the finish line.  Rae utilized a quicker reaction time to stay  ahead of Terry Henrikson, of Rapid City, in the semis.  Henrikson tried a bit too hard to catch Rae, breaking out in the process.  Pyle singled in to the  final in the uneven field.  Number one qualifier, Curt Humann, topped the field with a perfect light in round number two qualifying.  Humann lost to eventual winner, Pyle, in round one eliminations.

A 20 car field of No Box Shootout contestants narrowed down to Ken Standiford, of Midland, and Steve Boke, of Gettysburg, in the final. The first leaving Standiford, forced Boke to play catch up, just .005 seconds too hard.  Boke, in attempting to run down the fleeting Standiford,  broke out by the narrowest of margins.  Boke singled in to the final round, based on his quicker reaction time in round 3.  Standiford, once again, the first to leave the starting line, in his semifinal match up against Stan "Butch" Monson, of Groton, took the win on a break out.  Monson broke out by a heartbreaking .001 second at the stripe.   On a dial in of 10.440 seconds, Monson's hard charging '69 Mustang, stopped the timers at 10.339 seconds.  Drag racing is a sport of thousandth's of a second and margins of victory measured in inches.  Tommy Dale Vines, of Eagle Butte, put his '68 Camaro, in the number one qualifying position.  Roger Anderson, of Pierre, beat Vines, in their first round clash.  One again, the dreaded break out took Vines out of competition, by .001 seconds.

Trophy Shoot finals found two familiar faces in the mix, with Doug Percy, of Winner,  and Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, pairing off.  Percy, number two qualifier,  ran right on his dial in, to take the win from the breaking out Winterberg.  Qualifiers two, three, four and five met in the semis.  Percy and number four qualifier, Paul Berger, of Pierre, squared off in a match of Malibu's, with Percy, taking the win. Winterberg, number three, tangled with Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, the number five qualifier, in the balance of the semis, with Winterberg coming out on top.  Wes Magilke, of Pierre, captured the number one qualifying spot, only to lose in the first round to Shawn England, of Pierre.

Junior Dragster Shootout finals found rookie, Noah Miller, of Fort Pierre, taking the first win of his career, defeating fellow rookie, Jonathan Geuther, of Fort Pierre, in the finals. It was a battle of the "Grandpa's", with Geuther's chief mechanic, Danny Even, and Miller's head wrench, Cliff Jorgenson, battling for bragging rights.  In a double break out final, Miller hit closer to his dial in.  Dad, Chris Miller, and Noah's twin brothers, Alec and Jake, stood in victory circle, with the elated driver and crew chief.  Alec and Jake patiently await their 8th birthdays, this winter, in anticipation of the 2009

Junior Dragster season. Geuther defeated Ashley Holm, of Pierre in the semis and Miller dispatched Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg, in the balance of the round. Stephanie Holm, of Pierre, number one qualifier,

lost to Miller in round one.

Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series Race #4 brought together Rick Meier, of Box Elder, and Randy Nygaard, of Watertown, in the final.

Nygaard, driving his '90 Cavailer Super Gas entry, fell victim to Meier's '84 Corvette Super Street ride.  Meier, with a great .015 reaction time, broke out by a lesser amount than Nygaard at the stripe.  Nygaard's .042 breakout was trumped by Meier's .035.  The margin of victory, .0076 seconds, was one of  the closest of the weekend. Nygaard singled in to the finals, with Doug Legner, of Black Hawk, number one qualifier, losing to Meier, in the semis.

Thursday, September 11, 2008

Oahe Speedway will take 27 racers  to Bandimere Speedway, just outside Denver, for the Division 5 Summit Racing Series ET Finals.  The competition begins on Friday morning and continues through Sunday afternoon.  Teams from all Division 5 member tracks are invited.  Each member track is allowed to enter 36 racers and 4 high school entries.  Super Pro, Pro ET, Sportsman and Pro Bike will contend for Division 5 championships.  The winners of each category will qualify the NHRA Finals in Pomona, CA, in November.

Oahe Speedway Honors2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series

Champions

Wednesday, October 15, 2008

Oahe Speedway honored its 2008 Budweiser/Coca Cola Points Series Champions last Saturday evening at the Ramkota River Centre.

The Dale's A-1/Midwest Construction Super Series top five led off the program.  Randy Nygaard, of Watertown took home fifth place honors.

David Rae, of Gillette, WY, in fourth, fell only one point behind a third place tie between Chad Uhrig, and Jeff Friman, both of Pierre.  Rick Meier, of Box Elder, was the runner up, with two wins in the five race series.  Doug Legner, of Black Hawk, ran off with the series title, scoring one win, a runner up, and a semifinal showing to pace the field.  Thirteen drivers contended for the title in a series bringing together the NHRA classes, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street.

Super Pro, one of the growing fields, at Oahe Speedway, averaged 16 car fields throughout the season.  Doug Legner, of Black Hawk, finished in fifth place at season end.   Sean Billet, of Pierre,  moving up to a late model, Mullis rear engine dragster, adjusted to his new ride, placing fourth in the class.  Billet scored three wins in the ten race series.  Terry Henrikson, Rapid City,  took home three runners up trophies through the summer to finish in third place.  Jeff Friman, of Pierre, took the double points race on Memorial Day, and coupled that with a runner up in early August and

a win two weeks later, to end the points race in second place.

It was deja vu all over again in the 2008 Super Pro series, with Curt Hieb, of Chamberlain, taking home the championship jacket and signature championship rock trophy for the second consecutive year.  Hieb served notice in the opening race of the series, taking on all contenders and emerging with his first win of the season.  The 2007 series champion would go on to win two more races with an additional two runners up, to take the title.

Northeast South Dakota invader, Stan "Butch" Monson, of Groton, rolled in to Oahe Speedway in mid-May, with a goal in mind. Monson, and his family made the commitment to run for the points title, and made good on that goal.  Winning two  points races and finishing consistently in the quarterfinals or better, Monson grabbed his first ever season championship.  His limited edition, '69 Mustang fastback gave him a couple of driveline  scares along the way,  but for the most part was a carefree ride.  A 22 hour thrash prior to  points race #9,  was the closest call of the season.  Fortunately, the Ford ace had accumulated a

points lead that second place holder, Steve Boke, of Gettysburg, could not surpass.  Boke's potent '94 Firebird, was a major force to reckon with on Memorial Day, fairly quiet through the middle season and came back strong in the last four races of the season.  Larry Iversen, of Pierre, almost always a threat in his '67 2-door post Chevelle,  with two wins, and a quarterfinal showing, came within two points of Boke, settling in third place.  Iversen climbed as high as second place following race #6.  2007 Pro champ, Ken Standiford, of Midland, sorted out a new '66 Ford Ranchero, for the 2008 season, capturing fourth place in the standings. Standiford claimed wins in the midseason, and mid August to stay in the top five.  Jason Ehlers, 2005 Pro champ, took two runners up finishes, and a couple semifinal slots in the late season to take fifth place in the standings.

Amanda Peck, of Pierre, a rookie contender in the Rocket Lube Motorcycle/Snowmobile class, finished out the year in sixth place.  In her first year of competition, Peck proved that she is capable of running with the best on her '01 Arctic Cat.  Jason Kotz,of Pierre, saved his best for mid season, winning his first points race in mid July.  Riding his Mad Dog Racing Team '01 Suzuki Katana, Kotz got his first win out of the way and ran consistently to take fifth place on the points standings.  Fellow Mad Dog Racing teammates, Ed Pope, of Pierre, and Charles "Ninja" Snyder, of Belle Fourche, tied at fourth place. Both racers ran a consistent season long battle to stay in contention.  Shawn England, of Pierre,  having migrated from Sioux Falls, last spring, joined the growing class, to take third place in the class.  Riding a Honda CBR in the early season, England switched to a Suzuki Hyabusa late in the season.  Looking forward to the wintermonths, England promises to roll out a wicked new tune up on the Hyabusa for 2009.   Riding a new '08 Hyabusa all season long, second place Laura Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, was a winner in the first, fifth, and ninth races of the series.  Moldenhauer improved her points finish from fifth in 2007.   Repeat champion, Chris Boom, of Pierre, rode his '01 Arctic Cat ZR, to the win in four of the ten points races.  Boom, taking time to get it right, in the early season, finished strong in the final races to take his second consecutive title.

The Speedway's largest class, Amsoil Sportsman, found Travis Falcon, of Pierre,  no lower than second place in the standings all year.  The "Flying Falcon" took the points lead in race four . An early exit for Falcon in round five allowed Doug Percy, of Winner,  to gain ground.  Points race number five actually had the pair tied, but the following race was the turning point, with Percy unable to advance out of the first round.  Falcon would go on to win that round and moved solidly in to the lead.  Winning the first, fourth, sixth and ninth races put him  in a commanding lead, amassing a class record 4150 points, over 1200 ahead of second place Percy.  Steven Campbell, of Pierre, took third place with consistent finishes all summer long, coming on strong in the late stages of the championship.  Two quarterfinal showings coupled with a runner up finish on Labor Day,  secured a third place finish. Rookie Brad Ware, of Gettysburg, settled in to fourth place, never falling below fourth all season long. Ware took runner up honors on Memorial Day, in only his third weekend of competition.  2007 Amsoil Sportsman champion Kyle Currier, of Onida, and Chip Campbell, of Pierre, tied for fourth place.  Campbell, shaking down a new race car this spring, took the double points race on Memorial Day.  Derek Gray, of Pierre, ranked fifth in the series at season's end.

Brennan Gray, of Pierre, defended his 2007 Beck Motor Company Street Trophy championship with a decisive last few weeks of the season.  A late August charge, with two wins, secured the repeat title for Gray.  Alex Lindholm, of Pierre, never out of the top three all season, finished in second place.  Lindholm topped the field on Memorial Day and Labor Day.  Oral, SD's,  Bert Bogner, battled his way to the third position, based on consistent finishes in nearly every race he entered.  One win, two runners up, and two semifinal finishes secured third place honors for the 2006 Beck Motor Company Street Trophy champ.  Ron Winterberg, of Timber Lake, finished his sophomore season in 4th place, with two wins and two runners up.  Mike Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND, took two wins early in the season, to finish fifth in total points.  Running a limited production Hemi powered '07 Jeep Cherokee SRT8, Moldenhauer had consistent finishes early in the season to maintain a top five slot.

Snap-On/McGaugh Trailer Repair High School proved to be a tight knit class.  Four of the top six contenders won at least once during the season.  Alyssa Colson, of Blunt,, number six in the final tally, won race number nine.  Roman Bast, of Highmore,  had three runners up, to take fifth place.  Sonnie Boke, of Gettysburg, placed second on Memorial Day, and went on to finish fourth in the class. Josh Anderson, of Pierre, 2007 High School champion, had one win on Memorial Day.  Outside obligations kept the champ from competition in the middle season, relegating him to third place in the standings.  Tyler Ehlers, of Pierre, and Carl Morris, of Pierre, battled to the last race of the year to decide the championship.  By the narrowest of  margins, Ehlers took the championship by one point.  Despite Morris's four wins, Ehlers was able to capitalize on those days when Morris

fell in the early rounds.  In a true gesture of sportsmanship, Morris rode to victory lane with the newly crowned champ following Ehler's Labor Day final win.

Three-peat BankWest Junior Dragster champ, James Morris, of Pierre, tallied 4469 points to take his third consecutive points title.  In 35 round of competition, Morris won 31,  enroute to his third "rock". In addition to his Oahe Speedway success, Morris was a semifinalist at the Western Conference O'Reilly Junior Drag Racing League Finals at Bandimere Speedway(CO) in July.  Stephanie Holm, of Pierre, placed second, with a win in round eight, and a runner up finish in round nine.  Toni Vetter, of Gettysburg, in her last year of Jr Dragster competition, took third place honors.  Vetter will move to a door car in 2009.  The second half of the "Twisted Sisters" racing team, Ashley Holm, of Pierre,  placed fourth in the ten race season.  Jonathon Huse, missing four of the ten points races, still managed to take fifth place. Three runners up and a semifinal finish kept the Onida, SD youngster in the hunt.

Les Feist, of Clearwater, MN, was awarded the "I Can't Drive 55" award for setting both ends of the Oahe Speedway track records. Feist powered his

'04 Worthy rear engine dragster, powered by a 706 CI, 1450 HP Chevrolet engine, to 199.86 mile per hour, covering the Oahe Speedway quarter mile in 6.757 seconds.

Oahe Speedway is located 14 miles north of Pierre on SD Hwy 1804. The only 1/4 mile NHRA sanctioned drag strip in South Dakota will begin its fifth season of operation on April 18-19, 2009.

Cassandra Rupe-Pope Passes Oahe Speedway Friend, Volunteer, Racer

Cassandra

Monday, December 8, 2008

Cassandra Rupe-Pope, of Pierre, passed away on December 6, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital, Pierre, surrounded by family and friends.  Cassandra was an avid fan of the sport of drag racing, an Oahe Speedway volunteer, and, during the 2008 season, a racer.  Cassandra took to the track in her '07 Grand Prix, "living life to the fullest".   She leaves a host of friends, co- workers, her speedway family and family members to mourn her passing.

Cassandra's son, Eric Rupe, posted this moving tribute to his Mom, on caringbridge.com:

In his words:

"This is Eric, Cassandra's son,

My mom has been battling cancer for 3 years.  It got very severe in January of 2008.  As many people already know my mom did pass away to a better place on December 6, at 12:30am.  This surprised everyone.  When I got the call I was hanging out with my friend, Spencer.   I was told to go to the hospital to talk to Dr. Chicoine immediately.  He then told me the situation of my mom.  I was in complete shock.  I was the first person in the  ICU room, then shortly after my family and our close friends arrived.  That was the best part of it all.  My mom passed away with her close family and friends there with her.  She died with no great pain and her last words were "Just give me some relief".  God then took over and she is now absolutely worry free and out of pain.

Even though my mom is not physically here to help with this.  She has helped me through this hard time of my life.

During that 10 hardest months of her life she kept a very positive attitude and she never really got very sad or depressed.  That was huge inspiration for me.  If she went through the hardest time of her life and still lived her life to the fullest", I believe that every one of us can to the same in honor of my Mom.  That has helped me a great deal in this process. "

Prayer services will be held  at 7pm, on Tuesday, December 9, 2008 , at Isburg Funeral Chapel, 439 S Pierre, In Pierre.

Funeral services are set for 10am, on Wednesday, December 10, at Lutheran Memorial Church, 320 E Prospect, in Pierre.   A soup and salad luncheon will follow the services at the church.  The funeral  procession will depart the church at noon, with interment at Flandreau, SD, scheduled for 4pm.

Who is that Masked Man??

(Motor Race Images photo by Ardys Roseland)

Wednesday, December 10, 2008

How can you say no to an opportunity like this??  The chance to sit  in the cockpit of a legendary AA/Fuel Dragster??  And the opportunity to flip the magneto switch and bring that 392 BLOWN hemi to life?? On 91% nitro methane?? It sure didn't take long to answer that question.  The dragster in question resides in the Wally Parks NHRA Motorsports Museum, in Pomona, Ca., enjoying a well deserved retirement.  The car sometimes ventures outside the museum, under the watchful eyes of Dusty and Gwen McWilliams, assisted by their son, Shane.   The latest trip outside the Museum, took the car to the NHRA World Finals in mid-November.  While spending the World Finals weekend with close friends Darrell Conrad, Pam Schavrien, and legendary "Winged Express" AA/Fuel Altered owner, "Mousie" Marcellus, I was offered the chance to sit in Larry  Dixon, Sr's, former ride.  The fire up was one of the most unbelievable experiences of my "racing" career.  I had the privilege of sitting in the "Winged Express" at the '05 March Meet, in Bakersfield, Ca., not running, but still a thrill!.  The experience lasted only a couple minutes, but will be remembered for a lifetime. Darrell and Pam were kind enough to feature my "ride of a lifetime" on their website  www.aafdnews.com.  Please note their link to the Oahe Speedway website!!

Regards,

Marlin Roseland

A Note of Thanks from Marcia Graves:

Monday, December 22, 2008

"To my Oahe Speedway family -Thank you so much for your support over the last few weeks.  The food, the pictures, the flowers, the donations and most important - the stories and hugs. It's times like this that make you realize what is important - It's the time spent with good people making memories that last a lifetime and friends that hold you when times are rough. David loved the racing, but what both he and I treasured were thefriendships we made at the track.   In fact, the night before he left for hunting, he made the comment that we had FIVE months to wait before we could start racing again!  Thank you again for the good times we shared and for being there in the bad.   Also, I am looking forward to more good times in the future shared with you, my good friends."  Marcia Graves

 A special invitation from Marcia:

"And the new memories start on 1/17/09.  David's 60th birthday is 1/18/09 and he had been planning on having a birthday party all summer long. , so we are planning to have it!  We are planning on having it at "The Shop" on Airport Road, in Pierre,  starting about 6:00 on the 17th.  I am planning on supplying some liquid refreshments, sandwiches, potato salad and beans and some other folks are supplying brats.  There will be plenty of food, but if you insist on bringing something, chips/dips and appetizers would be allowed."

"Be sure to put it on your calendar and let me know at davegrv@aol.com or 605-224-1814 if you are coming.  ( I am a  farm girl and my biggest fear is that I won't have enough food!). "
