Results Posted for Opening Weekend

Monday, April 21, 2008

Oahe Speedway's 2008 season has officially begun.  Test and tune sessions on Saturday allowed the racers to work out the bugs and shake off  the cobwebs.  Racers from SD, ND , MN , IA, WY and NB, braved the cool, windy conditions to challenge the well prepped track.  Sunday proved to be just as breezy, with the running of the first Shootout races of the year.

In the Box Shootout, Curt Humann, of Pierre, defeated 2007 Oahe Speedway Super Pro champ, Curt Hieb of Chamberlain.  Humann, with a better reaction time, was able to drive around Hieb for the first win of the season.  Jeff Friman,  of Pierre,  with a  top speed of 175.06 mph, and a reaction time of .002,  took the number 1 qualifying spot.

No Box Shootout winner, Thad Smith, of Pierre faced Roger Hanson,  of Pierre, in the final.  Hanson, leaving first on the slower dial in, could not hold off the hard charging Smith for the win.  Hanson, in his first outing in Sean Billet's former  "All Pucker'd Up" '81 Malibu, qualified fourth, while winner Smith qualified 5th.  Randy Hirsch, of Pierre, pulled off a near perfect .001 reaction time to take the number one qualifying spot.

Doug Percy, of Winner, took the first Trophy Shootout of the season.  Percy dueled with Alyssa Colson, of Blunt in the final.  Colson broke out at the finish line in an attempt to catch Percy.  Both Percy and Colson were the first to receive the new trophies  to be awarded by the speedway this season. Upon seeing the new trophy  design from racetroiphies.com on the speedway website, Percy told his family that he "really wanted  to win one."   Allen Pope, of Pierre, became the first racer to qualify for the motorraceimages.com Perfect Light award.  Pope qualified number one in the class with a perfect .000 reaction time.

The Jr Dragster Shootout saw Carly Ellingson, Rapid City , and James Morris, 2007 Oahe Speedway Jr Dragster class champion, run off in a heads up competition.  Both drivers, dialed in at 7.92, broke out at the finish line.  Ellingson broke out closer to her dial in to take the win.  Ellingson took both the top speed and quickest reaction time in qualifying.  The Bars Leaks sponsored driver lead the field with a .009 reaction time and top speed of 83.97 mph in the 1/8th mile competition

In the first Gambler's race of the season, Van Huse, of Onida, beat Mike Moldenhauer, of Jud, ND.  Huse, driving his unique Tuttle Mini Dragster, powered by a 2000 Kawasaki motorcycle engine, trailered Moldenhauer's '07 Denali in the final.
